My hard drive just burned out on my pc, do i need to buy the same model or can it be any hard drive?

I am looking on-line and there is so many different ones... It is a Western Digital ( WD1600BB Caviar ) 160GB Hard Drive, and it came out of a Fujitsu Seimens Pc with xp installed on it... For example: could i buy a Seagate 1TB Hard drive and put it in? I would also like to know will I need to install a new operating system, or will that be stored somewhere else on the computer?
