If I buy the Droid, then would it be nescessary for me to get a data plan?

If I got the droid would I still have to pay 30 dollars a month to get internet access and everything even if I have wi-fi? For example, say I don't have a data plan, but I have wi-fi at home, then would I still have to pay for the internet or would it be free?
